Description This unit covers the competency required to safely handle, aim, fire, manoeuvre and maintain indirect fire weapons.The operator must be thoroughly familiar with characteristics and capabilities of the weapon and competent in the application of fire in an operational environment.The operator will work as part of a gun detachment team, be under direct supervision and receive orders that dictate all actions.This unit is not intended for missile systems, rocket systems or for small arms.

Learning Outcomes and Application The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Maneuver the weapon
  • Weapon is moved into position as directed
  • Weapon is prepared for firing in accordance with standard procedures
  • Weapon is prepared for movement in accordance with standard procedures
  • Occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements and recognised safety precautions are applied throughout the operation in accordance with standard procedures
       
Element: Aim the weapon
  • Ancillary equipment is prepared for use and operated as required or directed
  • Indirect fire weapon is aimed and adjusted as directed and in accordance with standard procedures
  • Aiming calculations and recordings are maintained in accordance with standard procedures
       
Element: Fire the weapon
  • Ammunition is handled under supervision and in accordance with standard procedures
  • Ammunition is visually inspected, defects are reported to supervisor and defective ammunition is quarantined as directed
  • Ammunition selected by the supervisor is prepared in accordance with orders
  • Ammunition is loaded and unloaded as directed
  • Gun is fired in accordance with orders
  • Misfire drills are completed as directed and in accordance with standard procedures
  • Ammunition residue is unloaded or removed after firing
       
Element: Maintain the serviceability of the weapon
  • Defects are reported to supervisor
  • Operating maintenance is conducted in accordance with standard procedures

Assessment must confirm the ability to work as part of a gun detachment team; to use the ancillary equipment listed in the Range Statement; and to identify all ammunition defects listed in the Range Statement.

Competency should be demonstrated over a period of time either on operations or in simulated operational environments.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in a simulated operational environment due to the high-risk nature of the activity. The simulation should replicate the live environment where stress and fatigue are key features. The individual must be assessed as part of a team carrying out each of the individual functions required to operate an indirect fire weapon.

Access to a live fire range, an indirect fire weapon and live ammunition.

Information that will assist or guide assessment will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.
